Put the EPUB in the same folder as the audiobook's files, then scan. Audiobookshelf treats everything in one book folder as one book, so you get a single item with both the audio and the ebook.

If they sit in two different folders, Audiobookshelf makes two separate books, and nothing links them.

## How do I make the ebook and audiobook one item?

1. Move the ebook file into the audiobook's folder:

```
audiobooks/
  Andy Weir/
    Project Hail Mary/
      Project Hail Mary.m4b
      Project Hail Mary.epub
```

2. In the Audiobookshelf web page, go to **Settings** > **Libraries** and click **Scan** next to the library.
3. Open the book. Its ebook is listed under **Ebook Files**, and a **Read** button sits next to **Play**. The button only shows when the ebook is the book's primary ebook, which needs **Audiobooks only** to be off (see below).

If the ebook was already in the library as its own book, moving the file leaves that old entry behind as missing. [Books still showing after deleting files](https://soundleafapp.com/server/audiobookshelf-missing-books-after-deleting-files/) covers clearing those.

Audiobookshelf reads EPUB, PDF, MOBI, AZW3, CBR and CBZ files, and its web reader opens all of them.

## What's a primary ebook and a supplementary ebook?

Each book has at most one primary ebook. That's the one the **Read** button opens and the one **Send Ebook to** sends. Any other ebook files in the folder are supplementary, which means extra files that come with the book, like a PDF of maps or a companion booklet.

When a folder has several ebooks, Audiobookshelf picks an EPUB as the primary if there is one, otherwise the first ebook it finds. To change it, open the book, find the file under **Ebook Files**, open its menu and choose **Set as primary** or **Set as supplementary**. You need permission to update books.

## What does the "Audiobooks only" library setting do?

With **Audiobooks only** turned on in a library's settings, Audiobookshelf ignores ebook files unless they sit inside an audiobook's folder, and those become supplementary ebooks.

That has two effects worth knowing:

- An ebook in a folder with no audio never shows up in that library.
- Ebooks next to audiobooks are kept, but as supplementary, and you can't set them as primary while the setting is on. Apps that only look for a primary ebook won't find them.

Turn it off if you want ebooks to be primary ebooks. Then open each book and use **Set as primary** on its ebook, or run **Force Re-Scan** on the library, because a normal scan skips files that haven't changed.

## How do I send an ebook to my Kindle?

Audiobookshelf can email the primary ebook of a book to a Kindle or any other e-reader with an email address. An admin sets up the email account once, then adds each e-reader.

1. Go to **Settings** > **Email**.
2. Fill in your email provider's SMTP details (the settings for sending mail): **Host**, **Port**, **Secure**, **Username**, **Password** and the **From Address**. For port 465, turn **Secure** on. For 587 or 25, leave it off.
3. Put your own address in **Test Address** and click **Save**. Then click **Test** to check it works (the button only shows once everything is saved).
4. Under **Ereader Devices**, click **Add Device**. Give it a name, enter the Kindle's email address, and choose who can use it under **Device is available to...**: **Admin users only**, **All users excluding guests**, **All users including guests** or **Select users**.
5. Add the **From Address** as an approved sender for each device. Audiobookshelf reminds you of this on the same page. For a Kindle, add it to the approved personal document email list in your Amazon account, or Amazon won't deliver the book.

To send a book, open it, click its three-dot menu, choose **Send Ebook to...** and pick the device. The menu only shows when the book has a primary ebook and at least one device is available to you.

Users who aren't admins can add their own e-readers on their **Account** page if an admin gives them the **Can Create Ereader** permission.

## Can SoundLeaf read the ebooks on iPhone?

SoundLeaf reads the EPUBs in your Audiobookshelf library, including supplementary ones, so it still finds them with **Audiobooks only** on. The [ebook reader guide](https://soundleafapp.com/docs/ebook-reader/) covers the reader and Read Along, and [Calibre and KOReader](https://soundleafapp.com/docs/calibre-and-koreader/) covers finding ebooks that aren't in Audiobookshelf.
